Dawn Chorus

A pre-breakfast visit to Gisburn Forest in time to catch the woodland dawn chorus. Expert RSPB guides will be on hand to identify and give information on the birds we will hear, like robins, song thrushes, redstarts and perhaps even a cuckoo!

Extended Moorland Safari

Join the RSPB and United Utilities to look for special moorland birds such as ring ouzels, curlews, peregrines and merlins. Learn about moorland management techniques that benefit both wildlife and water quality. With luck a ‘skydancer’ – the rare and enigmatic hen harrier – may be the highlight of the day!

Lucky Duck Workshop – Walk & Draw for 7 and under

Please do come and join us – you’ll be a lucky bird; you’ll listen to some poetry I bet you’ve never heard. Then be prepared for a short waddle and walk to feed the ducks and inspire all to return and draw their own ducks to take away. All materials provided.

Walk in Wenningdale

A fairly easy walk covering part of the Bentham Heritage Trail, walking through farmland to the bridge over the River Wenning at Greystonegill, with a return to Bentham via Staggarth, Shaky Bridge and the banks of the River Wenning.

Red and White Roses Walk

A ‘Red and White Rose’ walk around the Lancashire/Yorkshire boundaries. A more strenuous walk climbing steadily from the River Wenning at Shaky Bridge to the Great Stone on Burnmoor, then dropping down via Lowgill to Low Bentham. The return to High Bentham is along the banks of the River Wenning.

Simple Weaving and Dyeing

Make your own simple weaving loom with local materials. Use plants to dye wool from Middle Wood sheep and produce your own piece of decorative weaving. Suitable for beginners. Lunch provided.

Mountain Rescue Demonstration

An opportunity to watch Bowland Pennine Mountain Rescue Team in action. See how a search dog can find a casualty using scent and how the team evacuate a casualty to safety. You can view the action from the comfort of Smelt Mill, Mountain Rescue Headquarters set a stunning location in the Trough of Bowland.

Farming the Environment

New Laund farm is part of the Duchy of Lancaster Estate in the Hodder Valley. The Farm lies on the limestone reef knolls, which give it a very characteristic and dramatic landscape. You will be taken around the farm on a tractor and trailer and shown how modern farming methods are being combined with good environmental custodianship to look after this unique and special part of the Forest of Bowland. The view from the top of the knolls is not to be missed! Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Craftastic Family Raku Weekend

Family raku event across two Saturdays. Each family group would make a selection of pots on 7 th June. They would return on the 14 th to glaze the pots and then fire them in a raku kiln. They will witness the dramatic and exciting technique of raku and have their handmade unique pots to take home.

Bowland is a stronghold for Lancashire’s short-eared owl population and Whitendale’s purple moorland makes the perfect backdrop for an evening walk to encounter this wonderful bird of prey with guides from the RSPB.
