The Forest of Bowland is a special place for upland birds such as hen harriers and ring ouzels; birds that are in serious decline in other parts of the UK.
The RSPB has worked in this area since 1981, initially monitoring and attempting to stabilise Bowland’s breeding hen harrier population. Since then the organisation’s role has grown. The RSPB is now a lead partner of the Birds of Bowland Project which aims to involve the local community – from farmers to schoolchildren – in improving and celebrating the area’s outstanding birdlife.
Despite decades of intense effort by the RSPB and others, the hen harrier remains one of the UK’s most threatened birds of prey. The RSPB works with the United Utilities Bowland Estate to protect hen harriers in Bowland. It is also working with the estate to improve the management of over 10,000 hectares of land.
Find out more about the RSPB at www.rspb.org.uk or by calling the Northern England Region on 01484 861148.
