Walking Grades

Each walk and activity is given a walk grading to help you to assess the length of the activity (A to H) and the type of ground involved (1 to 9).

A Up to 20 minutes

1 Flat, surfaced paths suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs.

B Up to 40 minutes

2 Rural or urban walks on pavements, crossing some roads.

C Up to 1 hour

3 Flat, across fields, with some stiles.

D Up to 1 ½ hours

4 Fields, country lanes and tracks, with some gentle slopes.
You can expect to come across stiles and livestock.

E 2 hours

5 Fields, country lanes and tracks, with some moderate slopes.
You can expect to come across stiles and livestock.

F Half day
(around 3 hours)

6 Fields, country lanes and tracks, with some steeper climbs.
You can expect to come across stiles and livestock.

G Full day
(around 6 ½ hours)

7 Limited paths, rough walking and steeper climbs.
You can expect to come across stiles and livestock.

8 Beach.

9 Pond or river – this walk will be in or around water. Suitable shoes and clothing must be worn.


For example:

B1 would be a 40 minute walk on flat, surfaced paths (a health walk).

G7 would be a full day’s walk on rough, steep ground.
